Going Solar: From Benchwarmer to Home Run!

It was 11:05AM on a Monday in Duxbury, and I was waiting to meet with a customer looking to go solar. Mr. W., the customer, asked to move our meeting from 11:00AM to 11:30AM (to which I obliged), which left me in a bit of a dilemma…what to do for a half an hour? Both my gas tank and my food tank (i.e. my stomach) were both running a little low by this time, so I pulled into a local gas station. Noticing the small sub shop across the street, I thought to myself “A perfect fit.”

I pulled into the driveway under the open glass window of the sub shop. “Benchwarmers, that’s kind of how I’m feeling,” I thought. With 25 minutes to spare before my meeting, I walked in to the pleasant eatery decorated with local flare: photos of the town’s girls and boys hockey teams, pictures of family members and notable patrons. Beside the cooler full of drinks and a rack of chips and goodies, there was a smiling young man standing at the cash register, waiting to take my order. “What would you like?”

Solar On Your Home: Worth The Wait!

A simple solar installation depends on many different players to bring about lasting quality. First, there is the sales process, which involves an in-house presentation with a solar consultant, then a site visit to get measurements, roof design and specifications. It requires gathering information such as electric bills and qualifying documents. Then there are structural engineering requirements. This is followed by the next, and probably the longest process…getting building permit, after which comes requesting permission to install a solar system from the utility company. Once the necessary permits and documentation is squared away, the materials are ordered, shipped and delivered to the site. The installation must then take place on a no precipitation day (no rain, no snow, etc.). After the panels are installed, we get the town building inspector to come to verify that everything is buttoned up and in-code with building regulations. Completion documents are then submitted for rebate completion and to the utility company for permission to operate the system. The utility company schedules a site visit and installs a net meter. After that, you are officially on-line – the start of a beautiful relationship between you, your panels and the sun!

Massachusetts Incentives ~ Encouraging Solar Forward Movement!

Did you know that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a goal and a plan to reach 1.6 giga-watts of solar PV electricity by the year 2020? That is an amazing goal. It started back in 2008 with an initial goal of 400 measly mega-watts by 2016. Incentives were created to move the markets for people in the Commonwealth. Then, a funny thing happened – the 400 mega-watts was reached in 2013… can you believe it? So, we regrouped and revised a meager goal to a monster goal: 1.6 Giga-watts by 2020!
